Toyota Australia leaves a lasting legacy in local community (834)

Sixteen Sutherland Shire students are the inaugural recipients of Toyota Australia Scholarships.

As part of a legacy project, designed to give back to the local community ahead of the Woolooware Bay site closure, the scholarships will help local students overcome barriers to further education.

Available to motivated young people in the Sutherland Shire enrolled in a secondary, combined or special school, this first group of recipients have hopes of exploring a variety of future careers including medicine, child care, science and visual arts.

"I am delighted that Toyota can foster the educational dreams of these Sutherland Shire students," Toyota Australia's Executive Director, Sales and Marketing, Tony Cramb said.

"With our Woolooware Bay site closing, we wanted to ensure that we left a lasting and valuable community benefit after our departure."

The project, driven in partnership with Schools Plus, a non-profit organisation bringing together donors and disadvantaged schools, will continue to connect Toyota Australia with local schools and students in need.

"Joining forces with corporates like Toyota Australia who generously support local schools and students, is absolutely necessary for ensuring the next generation receives a quality education," Rosemary Conn, CEO of Schools Plus, said.

As well as the scholarship program, Toyota is providing grants to five Sutherland Shire schools. The grants will assist priority projects, specific to the needs of students, from Endeavour Sports High School, Dunlea Centre, Bates Drive School, Cook School and Minerva School.

Over the next three years, Toyota and Schools Plus will continue to support these five schools as well as provide financial scholarships to ensure a meaningful and lasting legacy of Toyota in the Sutherland Shire is delivered.

As part of Toyota Australia's transition to a national sales and distribution company, the consolidation of all corporate functions from Sydney to Melbourne will take effect by 1 January 2018.
