Toyota Australia has initiated a recall of approximately 12,000 HiAce vehicles built between December 2009 and March 2012.
On the involved vehicles, shifting the gear lever from P-R-N-D-2-L moves a manual valve inside the automatic transmission to engage the intended gear position. Due to a lack of strength in the manual valve lever pivot connection, the intended gear shift position may not match the vehicle behaviour, i.e. unable to shift out of P or unable to shift out of a drive position (R-D-2-L).
A letter will be sent to all impacted owners once parts arrive requesting that they make an appointment at their preferred Toyota dealer.
For all involved vehicles, Toyota Dealers will replace the manual valve lever used for the control of gear selection in the automatic transmission with a new one at no cost to guests.
The repair will take approximately 4 hours and will be carried out free of charge.
There have been no reported cases in Australia as a result of this condition.
