Subaru partnered with Life Education NT and Healthy Harold to deliver a safe driving message to remote and Indigenous communities in the Northern Territory, thanks to a grant awarded to Life Education NT as part of the Towards Zero Road Safety Grants program.
The “Get Your Mob There Safely†program visited young children, adolescents and families in Palmerston, Jabiru, Gunbalanya and Katherine, kicking off “Ocsoberâ€â€“ a fundraising initiative from Life Education that encourages Australians to give up alcohol for the month of October.
Molly Taylor, Subaru do Motorsport driver and 2016 Australian Rally Champion, was on hand to help cover topics such as car maintenance, safe driving positions, road rules, remote first aid, safe car seat installation and the effects that drugs and alcohol have on driving.
Subaru Australia Managing Director, Colin Christie, said: “Subaru is committed to helping reduce the number of road related injuries and deaths on Australian roads and an important step in that journey is educating the next generation of drivers.â€
Molly Taylor, Subaru Ambassador, said: “The engagement we received from the communities we visited was very encouraging.
“By focusing on some fundamental road safety messages such as the dangers of overcrowding, the importance of seat belts and the general condition of the vehicle, we’re able to help empower individuals to make smarter and safer choices each time they get behind the wheel.â€
Much-anticipated appearances at each event from Life Education’s “Healthy Harold†and the Northern Territory Government’s “Hector the Road Safety Cat†proved to be a popular avenue for reinforcing safe driving practices with the children.
Deb Martin, Chief Executive Officer of Life Education NT, said: “Being able to visit these communities regularly, we knew that it was vital to educate them on the effects of drugs and alcohol on the body, demonstrating to young people the consequences of their actions, enabling them to make safer and healthier decisions when getting behind the wheel.
“With the support of our other partners in this initiative, we were able to reach some of our most remote communities to deliver these much-needed messages in a fun and interactive way.â€
