The baby of the little Czech brand that could, Fabia continues to stand strong against its rivals with clever packaging, impressive real-world fuel economy, sound on-road dynamics and no shortage of equipment.

Autonomous emergency braking (AEB) as standard is almost a snapshot of the brand’s commitment to adding value in every segment it serves. Fabia’s outstanding build quality, generous accommodation levels and sophisticated infotainment systems also makes this our ongoing First car champion.

Indeed, there’s not much to fault in the Skoda Fabia save for a black mark for road noise levels on coarse chip roads (a common issue with Euros Down Under) and (as you’d expect from a light car platformed hatch) limited space in the rear centre seat.

Skoda still needs to look at servicing costs and poor resale value also hurts the model’s overall standing, but at this sort of purchase price, it’s almost impossible to buy better bang for bucks or spec.

Fabia is a foundation upon which the Czech brand will build a following Down Under. That it fares so well against its rivals from Japan and Korea is instructive.

European sophistication and safety at this end of the market? Simply Clever indeed...
