Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive
Every model in the Australian Subaru range has symmetrical All-Wheel Drive (AWD), producing optimum balance and control – a major element in the superb handling of the new Impreza. That’s why Subaru has a solid reputation for technology, safety and superior road holding. On tarmac and unsealed roads, AWD offers greater traction from all four wheels. Snow and sudden downpours are our favourite conditions because that’s when you’ll fully appreciate the benefits of symmetrical All-Wheel Drive. Challenging road surfaces bring the benefits of Advanced Driving Technology into focus. It’s a product of award-winning engineering developed over 30 years, including extensive Australian testing – so the Impreza you drive is set up to suit our unique conditions.
Subaru Symmetrical Drive Trains
The components that drive your Subaru are all perfectly symmetrical. These include the horizontally opposed “flat” Boxer engine (so-called because the sideways cylinder action resembles the punching action of a boxer); the transmission, propeller shaft and rear differential, which transfer power from engine to wheels are all laid out in a straight line. The result: ideal weight distribution, low centre of gravity and optimum balance for greater driver control and enjoyment. The system uses fewer parts and produces less movement than other types of engine and AWD combinations, leading to greater durability and noise reduction.
Engine

The world-renowned, low centre of gravity, horizontally-opposed Subaru Boxer engine combines smooth linear acceleration, precise engine response and mountains of low-tomid range torque for superior driving performance on the highway or off the beaten track. With improved fuel efficiency along with the benefits of symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, this is one car that really makes sense.
Active Valve Control System (AVCS)
The AVCS varies both lift and timing of engine valve movements to improve combustion efficiency. One valve is operated by both low and high lift cams to provide the best of both low and high valve-lift characteristics. Thus more efficiently delivering power and torque across the rev range.
Subaru 2.5 litre DOHC Turbo1 Boxer Engine
The renowned turbocharged technology in the Impreza WRX has optimum drivability across the operating range, producing 169kW of power at 5200rpm and maximum torque of 320Nm at 2800rpm. AVCS compliments the Electronic Throttle Control; drive by wire technology ensures instant response to the driver’s input. It provides a potent package and thrilling driving experience – smooth power delivery, excellent grip, all linked to our Advanced Driving Technologies. Both power and torque curves clearly illustrate the strength of our 2.5 litre engine across the operating range. Power and torque are delivered earlier in the rev range for a sportier more tractable driving experience.
Subaru Boxer 2.0 litre SOHC Engine
The 2.0-litre horizontally opposed Boxer engine produces 110kW of power at 6400rpm and 196Nm of torque at 3200rpm. The flatter torque curve of the DOHC engine offers greater flexibility in delivering traction across all operating conditions. As with the Impreza WRX, the naturally aspirated Impreza has an Active Valve Control System (AVCS) and Electronic Throttle Control (ETC), optimising torque delivery in response to acceleration and providing a more linear acceleration/deceleration feeling.
Both power and torque curves clearly illustrate the strength of our 2.0-litre engine across the operating range. So, power and torque are delivered earlier in the rev range for a smoother, more refined driving experience.
1. This engine requires 95 RON unleaded fuel. This fuel is not available in all areas of Australia.
Performance

Electronically Controlled SPORTSHIFT1 Automatic & Manual Transmissions
SPORTSHIFT1 is a feature of every automatic transmission Impreza. This gives you the option to instantly change up or down a gear via the gear lever, using electronic control. It allows greater flexibility to suit your driving style and means pulling power is always easily accessible. The intelligent SPORTSHIFT features active torque split, which distributes torque to the front and rear wheels smoothly and quickly depending on your driving environment and style. Subaru automatic transmissions provide excellent shift quality. Every automatic SPORTSHIFT transmission Impreza uses “Direct” electro-hydraulic control, delivering superb response while ensuring smooth gear changes. Combined with our SPORTSHIFT automatic transmission selector, the result is highly refined performance.
The five-speed manual has been meticulously engineered to complement our horizontally opposed Boxer engine to provide optimum power delivery across the full range of driving conditions, leading to smooth gear changes and reduced noise, vibration and harshness.

Electronic Throttle Control (ETC)
The entire Impreza range features Electronic Throttle Control (ETC) or “drive-by-wire” technology. This eliminates any mechanical connection between accelerator and throttle. It ensures optimum throttle opening based on driver input and the engine’s operating parameters. The result is smooth, responsive throttle control, making you more “in touch” with power delivery – adding to the sense of safety and control behind the wheel.
Subaru Intelligent Chassis Design (SI-Chassis)
Our state of the art Subaru Intelligent Chassis and fully independent suspension system provides world-class control and stability, particularly when cornering. Light, yet strong and rigid components are used, with finely tuned suspension geometry and dynamics producing outstanding handling and consistent contact with the road. The engine mounting position is low for an even lower centre of gravity to improve stability. McPherson strut type independent front suspension, a double wishbone suspension system and power-assisted rack and pinion steering combine to provide a smooth, controlled ride with excellent road holding. The double wishbone rear suspension sits low, under the floor so it does not intrude into the spacious, rear cargo area. All links are attached to the sub frame, which ensures vibrations from the road surface are absorbed by the sub frame, resulting in reduced shocks to the vehicle itself and therefore a more comfortable drive.
Collision Avoidance
Safety Starts with Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive
Subaru symmetrical All-Wheel Drive offers greater traction in a wide variety of conditions. The foundation of our collision avoidance technology, our symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system offers superior grip to that of other two wheel drive or part time AWD systems - that is why Impreza is among the safest in its class for collision avoidance. On tight corners, wet roads, in snow and on muddy tracks, Impreza achieves optimum traction. The ideal balance of the symmetrical drive train provides extra control, while the Horizontally-Opposed Boxer engine sits low and flat in the engine bay, underlying the ideal centre of gravity.
Sophisticated Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist (BA)
The Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) is a fundamental part of our safety philosophy, offering shorter stopping distances in emergencies. That is why we have ABS braking with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist (BA), standard on the entire Impreza range. ABS braking uses independent sensors to detect and control braking on each wheel, providing the control required to allow the driver to brake and steer away from danger. EBD balances the ABS system to provide greater reassurance by automatically adjusting rear brake force to maximise stopping power. Subaru uses an advanced Bosch four-sensor/four-channel/threephase ABS. Brake Assist (BA) detects emergency braking adjusting and optimising braking pressure.
Our view on Rear Vision
Our dedication to safety includes a commitment to an optimum field of vision for drivers, especially when reversing. Vision is an essential component of active safety design and Subaru has minimised blind spots, enabling the driver to easily judge exterior dimensions of the vehicle and control it.
Vehicle Dynamics Control System (VDC)
Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC) is a stability control system featured in every Impreza. It is designed to give you greater control in emergencies. VDC’s heart is an electronic control unit (ECU) that uses information from sensors tracking wheel speed, steering position, longitudinal and lateral (sideways) G force, and yaw rate, to monitor forces that could destabilise vehicle running. In extreme situations, such as when swerving, sideslipping or entering a spin, VDC activates to control vehicle stability via torque distribution, power reduction or braking. In normal conditions, it only monitors vehicle dynamics and leaves the driver in control. But near the performance limits it gives you more control – producing a safer and more comfortable drive.
Collision Protection

ANCAP - 5 Star Occupant Safety Rating
Subaru is among the first car companies to achieve a maximum five-star rating for occupant safety for every Australian specification model in our range, from the respected and independent Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP). Every new generation Impreza has the maximum five star crashworthiness rating for occupant safety. To achieve this, Impreza was crash-tested by ANCAP and the car minutely inspected to check the structure and potential occupant effects. The ANCAP five-Star symbol is your assurance of superior protection in the event of an accident.
Advanced Thinking in Body Design
Impreza has a ring-shaped reinforcement safety cell, featuring steel reinforcements, crumple zones and rigid elements that protect occupants by absorbing energy in the event of a collision, reducing the risk of occupant injury. The flat Boxer engine’s low position also means it slides below the cabin in a severe frontal collision. The energy absorbing collapsible steering column and brake pedal also help minimise driver injury.
Superior Passenger Protection
The Impreza R and RX models are equipped with active front seat head restraints, which minimise whiplash. In a rear end collision they instantly move forward to support the head. Every Impreza has front seat passenger seatbelt indicator lights to assist the driver to make a simple visual check, ensuring their front occupant has belted up. All three rear seatbelts have Automatic Emergency Locking Retractors (A/ELR). When fully extended, they ratchet back into position, fully securing child safety seats. Front seatbelts have pretensioners and load limiters for enhanced safety.
Front, Front Side and Curtain Airbags
Every Impreza has dual front, front side and curtain airbags offering greater head, chest and lower back protection from injury in a heavy collision. Dual front airbags feature two stage inflators, which control the airbag opening according to impact force. Sensors within the vehicles determine the severity of the impact and deploy the appropriate airbags as and if required.
DataDot Technology
All Subaru Impreza models are fitted with the latest advanced engine immobilisers and DataDot technology. Approximately 7,000 microscopic dots are laser-etched with your vehicle’s unique VIN, then applied to the components via a patented spraying process. Window labels warn potential thieves that your vehicle and all its component parts will be easily identifiable for the authorities.
