Hybrid Camry wins two major awards
Toyota Australia's locally built Hybrid Camry has won its first two major Australian awards.
Nine of Australia's most senior motoring journalists have voted Hybrid Camry as the winner of the prestigious Green Innovation Award.
Hybrid Camry has also been named winner of the People's Choice Award in an on-line poll.
It is the second year running that a Toyota petrol-electric hybrid has claimed these two prestigious awards, following last year's victories by the Prius.
The awards were presented today by Fairfax Drive national motoring editor Toby Hagon.
Judges praised Hybrid Camry for its small-car fuel consumption and above-average engine performance.
They described it as a breakthrough car for the Australian automotive industry, offering a tangible benefit as soon as it is driven from the showroom.
Toyota Australia's senior executive director sales and marketing David Buttner said Hybrid Camry brings the performance and fuel-saving benefits of Toyota's hybrid technology to mainstream car buyers.
"Its fuel economy and emissions are the best for any Australian-built car," Mr Buttner said.
"It delivers large-car performance while substantially reducing fuel bills and environmental impact compared with other similar-sized family cars," he said.
"It is the only mid-sized passenger car and the only Australian-built car awarded the maximum five stars by the Australian Green Vehicle Guide."
Mr Buttner said Hybrid Camry is a family car with a spacious and airy cabin, plenty of back-seat space, a large boot and a full-size spare.
"This Award is shared by our employees at Altona in Melbourne who produce the best-quality cars in this country," he said.
