Toyota Aurion AT-X Named Best Large Car in Australia 2007

Aurion AT-X

Toyota's Aurion AT-X is the best large car available on the Australian market - for the second year running, according to Australia's influential motoring clubs.

Announcing the 2007 Australia's Best Cars awards, the clubs' judges said Toyota's 'big six' has continued to outstrip its traditional rivals including Holden Commodore Omega, Ford Falcon XT and Mitsubishi 380 ES.

Judges said Aurion AT-X "reigns supreme" in its class due to its safety, fuel economy, performance and technology.

"Looking at the Aurion, it's easy to be dazzled by the numbers: 200kW of power, a six-speed automatic transmission, six airbags, impressive fuel consumption plus electronic stability control," the judges said.

"Priced competitively and backed by Toyota's strong reputation, it's a worthy second-time winner," they said.

"It continues to lead the large-car class with gusto."

The win is Aurion's second title in just five days: last week it was named "best large car" in the 2007 Fairfax Drive Car of the Year awards - also for the second, consecutive year.

Australia's Best Cars' chief judge Ernest Litera said Aurion delivered everything consumers expect, including stability control, ABS and six airbags.

"It's a terrific well-rounded package of technology and refinement," Mr Litera said.

Aurion rated highest in its class in the "critical" areas of safety and the environment.

It was equal highest in performance, ride, braking, smoothness and quietness, running and repair costs, ergonomics, and build and finish quality.

The judges said Aurion is "an enviable choice" with "one of the most sophisticated drive-train packages in the business".

Its engine is "a standout with 200kW of power" and it also has "class-leading fuel economy figures".

The six-speed automatic transmission "combines crisp, precise shifting with seamlessness to which luxury vehicles twice the price aspire".

It has "the highest levels of active and passive safety for buyers looking at a large car".

Aurion's suspension is "more than an equal to the rest in the class" with capable handling, nicely weighted steering and minimal body roll.

Ride quality "puts it at the top of the class for occupant comfort", and the interior has a classy look and feel.

Toyota Australia's senior executive director sales and marketing David Buttner said the automotive industry had high regard for Australia's Best Cars awards.

"I am proud to accept this award on behalf of the 4000 passionate Australians who build the Aurion at our Altona manufacturing plant in Melbourne," Mr Buttner said.

"This is their award."
