Liberty and Outback win Australia's Best Car Awards

Subaru has won two titles in the respected Australia’s Best Cars (ABC) awards for 2009, announced by the country’s combined motoring organisations in Melbourne.
Subaru took the honours with:
- Liberty 3.6R Premium – Best Prestige Car
- Outback 2.5i – Best Recreational 4WD
While Liberty and Impreza variants have received previous awards, Outback is a first-time ABC winner. The win follows last week’s honours when Outback was named Best SUV Under $40,000 in Fairfax’s Drive Car of the Year 2009. In ABC, cars were evaluated by the NRMA, RACV, RACQ, RAASA, RACWA, RACT and AANT against a broad range of criteria including: safety, build quality, ride, handling, on road performance, design, function and value for money.
The motoring organisations have a combined membership of 6.5 million people Australia-wide and 2009 marks the ABC awards 10th anniversary. This year they evaluated more than 280 cars before settling on 36 finalists, including Liberty and Outback.
Subaru Australia Managing Director, Nick Senior, said: “We are delighted that the new generation Liberty and Outback have been recognised by the independent and respected motoring organisations, whose rigorous, objective testing and research is highly regarded.
“The safety, durability and fun driving that Liberty and Outback represent is reflected in their sales, which are helping Subaru to a remarkably successful year in a challenging market.”
Mr Senior also paid tribute to the engineers from both Fuji Heavy Industries, the maker of Subaru cars, and Subaru Australia, who conducted extensive local testing to ensure the optimum set-up for local conditions.
“We never take off-the-shelf models and are grateful to the factory and our own engineers, for their local testing in a huge variety of conditions.”
Since the motoring organisations launched their combined national awards in 2000, Subaru has won 15 titles.
Every Subaru sold in Australia shares the same five-star rating for occupant safety from the respected and independent Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP).
Shared across the model ranges are dual front, side and curtain SRS airbags and the ring-shaped reinforcements surrounding the passenger cabin – basically a series of high-strength metal components that help absorb energy in the event of a heavy collision.
New Liberty and Outback also add a driver’s knee SRS airbag (with the exception of Liberty Exiga).
Subaru’s Australian range is crash tested locally – it does not rely on overseas results, which may not necessarily reflect local specification or use right hand drive cars.
